Octagonal Water Pavilion

Octagonal Water Pavilion

BRIEF HISTORY:Situated right on the road leading to Hampi from Kamalapuram, this large water pavilion is octagonal with huge four-centred arches springing from heavy square piers. Originally, the building had much stucco decoration. The roof has a low octagonal dome. There is a deep octagonal basin in the centre of the building and to the south of the basin is a massive monolithic trough. The ceiling of the pavilion consists of small domes with lotus motifs alternating with vaults. The central ceiling is a low, irregular octagonal dome which perhaps had an ornate lotus motif originally. Outside the pavilion, are seen remains of water-pipes which were used for supplying water to the building.
